BOARD OF ALDERMEN AMENDS NOISE ORDINANCE IN RECOGNITION OF EXTREME HEAT

Southport, NC – In an emergency-called meeting of the City of Southport Board of Aldermen on Wednesday, July 26, 2023, the Board voted to amend the City Noise Ordinance that will allow for the City Manager, after notifying the Board of Aldermen, to modify the start and ending times for outside private contractors to work during adverse weather and/or other emergency events.

Because of the excessive heat, the City encourages builders, contractors, and anyone working outside to utilize this time to focus outside work toward the early morning, starting at sunrise, and evening hours, to stay hydrated, and to be mindful of any pre-existing conditions.

Alderman Lowe Davis states, “This is a humane response to the suffering we can see all around us in this extreme heat. There have been numerous accounts of landscapers, roofers, painters, heavy equipment operators, and road crews fainting or needing medical attention while working in the heat right here in Southport. I hate for anyone to be disturbed by noise any earlier than expected, but I feel we should do what we can to protect the health of people whose jobs require them to be working outside in these difficult days.”

Mayor Hatem states that, “The decision by our Board to amend the Code of Ordinances to allow the City Manager to modify work times for outdoor private contractors will help to mitigate the effects of adverse conditions on them due to weather or other potential emergencies.”
