In the spirit of the holiday season, Mayor Hatem will light the Downtown Christmas Tree.  The difference is, this year, the tree will be lit at Whittler’s Bench and there will be no spectators.

As always, ‘Twas the Night before Christmas” will be read, and the Trinity United Methodist Church children’s choir will serenade us with time-honored Christmas carols.  Delight in a Southport Colonial Christmas at Fort Johnston.

The Southport Tree Lighting Ceremony can be viewed online HERE November 27, 6 p.m. So, cozy up, have some popcorn, make a cup of hot chocolate and join us to share in the joy of the season.

The Southport Police Department is currently accepting applications for the annual “Shop with a Cop” program.  Applications are available on the City of Southport website, www.cityofsouthport.com/shop-with-a-cop/or by calling the Southport Police Department at 910-457-7911.

While the department would love to help every child with a need, available resources require the need to limit the program to families within the Southport 28461 zip code. The age limit for children will remain at 14 unless there are special circumstances, and these circumstances should be indicated on the application.

As with many programs and events this year, precautions must be taken to protect the children, our citizens, our officers and volunteers. We will not be doing the traditional meet and shop with officers at Walmart as in years past. Gifts will be bought, packaged and identified for each individual child. On December 17th – 19th (Thursday, Friday and Saturday), the gifts will be available for curbside pick-up at the Southport Fire Department Substation located at 111 Nash Street from 10am until 4 pm. Photo identification of the registered parent /guardian is required when collecting the gifts.

Applications will be accepted until 5 p.m. on Friday, December 4th and can be dropped off at the Police Department, 1029 N. Howe St. by the registering parent/guardian, or can be submitted from the City website.

Donations are also being accepted and can be dropped off at the Southport Police Department. Please make checks out to Southport Police Department and note “Shop with a Cop” in the memo section.
