Employment Opportunity: EMS Captain

The City of Southport is seeking qualified applicants for the EMS Captain position. This position is a permanent full-time role with the City.

The EMS Captain will report to the Battalion Chief of Operations and will be supervised daily regarding briefings and task assignments. The person in this position will work 24-hour shifts and will be on the ambulance, but may occasionally perform firefighting duties. The EMS Captain will also attend monthly training and business meetings up to three times a month in the evening.

The employee will perform duties for the Southport Fire Department as related with directing a variety of departmental activities to include fire suppression, fire prevention and education programming, and emergency medical response to protect the lives and property of our citizens from fire damage and injury. The EMS Captain focuses on the emergency medical services planning, organizing, and service while also assisting with fire related matters.

Minimum Requirements:
Graduation from a community college with a certificate in firefighter studies, medical technology, public administration, or other related field, completion of advanced courses and seminars in fire administration and firefighter studies and emergency medical service, and considerable fire and/or EMS supervisory experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

The person in this position must have a valid North Carolina driver’s license. NC Fire Fighter 1 & 2 certification is required, or to be received within in 1 year. EMT-Advanced certification is required. Paramedic certification is preferred. Fire Officer and/or EMS Officer certification is required or to be obtained within 1 year. Emergency Vehicle Driver Certification is required. Employee must obtain and maintain yearly CPR certifications.

Physical Requirements:
Must be able to physically perform the basic life operational functions of climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, pulling, lifting, talking, hearing, and perform repetitive motions. Must be able to perform medium work exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and 50 pounds of force frequently, and up to 20 pounds of force constantly. Must possess the visual acuity to perform accounting, computer work, and extensive reading in addition to operating equipment.
