Employment Opportunity: Firefighter
The City of Southport is seeking qualified applicants for the Firefighter position. This position is a permanent full-time role with the City.
This position will report to the Shift Captain and will be supervised daily regarding briefings and task assignments. The person in this position will work shifts as 24 hours on/48 hours off and will also attend monthly training and business meetings up to three times a month in the evening.
A Firefighter is an essential employee in the time of emergency situations and/or times of disaster, and/or at the Fire Chief’s discretion. The employee will perform duties for the Southport Fire Department as related to functions in support of fire suppression, fire prevention, hazardous materials, emergency medical, and other emergency services; and other tasks or duties as assigned by superiors. The full duties and responsibilities of this position are on file and will be given upon request.
Minimum Requirements:
High School diploma or GED is required and experience in firefighting is preferred. Must possess a valid NC driver’s license and receive and maintain a CPR certification.
Physical Requirements:
This work requires regular exertion of up to 25 pounds of force and occasional exertion of up to 100 pounds of force; work regularly requires standing, walking, speaking or hearing, using hands to finger, handle, or feel, climbing or balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling, reaching with hands and arms, pushing or pulling, lifting, and repetitive motions; frequently requires sitting, tasting or smelling; work has standard vision requirements; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; work requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data, visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, using of measuring devices, assembly or fabrication of parts within arm’s length, operating machines, operating motor vehicles or equipment and observing general surroundings and activities; work regularly requires exposure to outdoor weather conditions, exposure to blood-borne pathogens, and exposure to fumes or airborne particles; work occasionally requires exposure to wet, humid conditions (non-weather), working in high, precarious places, exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals, exposure to extreme heat (non-weather), exposure to the risk of electrical shock, working with explosives, exposure to vibration, and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment; work is generally in a loud noise location.
