SOUTHPORT – The popular Southport-Fort Fisher ferry route will resume service at 1 p.m. July 31, after the completion of a project to replace the aging cable-counterweight ramp system at both ends of the route.

The $3 million project replaced the old system with an updated hydraulic ramp system.
The schedule, beginning July 31, will be as follows:
Monday-Friday:
  • From Southport: 5:30 a.m., 7, 7:45, 8:30, 9:15, 10:45 and 11:30 a.m., 1 p.m., 1:45, 2:30, 3:15, 4, 4:45 and 6:15 p.m.
  • From Fort Fisher: 6:15 a.m., 7:45, 8:30, 9:15, 10 and 11:30 a.m., 12:15 p.m., 1:45, 2:30, 3:15, 4, 4:45, 5:30 and 7 p.m.
Saturday-Sunday:
  • From Southport: 7 a.m., 8:30, 9:15, 10, 10:45 and 11:30 a.m., 12:15 p.m., 1, 1:45, 2:30, 3:15, 4, 4:45 and 6:15 p.m.
  • From Fort Fisher: 7:45 a.m., 9:15, 10, 10:45 and 11:30 a.m., 12:15 p.m., 1, 1:45, 2:30, 3:15, 4, 4:45 and 5:30 p.m.
All commuter passes with an expiration date of Jan. 5, 2020 or later will be given an automatic extension credit of 208 days to compensate for the closure of the Southport-Fort Fisher route.
As on all N.C. Ferry System routes, passengers on the Southport-Fort Fisher ferry are asked to help prevent the spread of COVID-19 by wearing face coverings and staying socially distanced while out on ferry decks or inside passenger lounges.

Joint Workshop

Notice is given that a joint workshop has been scheduled for Monday, July 27, 2020 at 3:30 p.m. The meeting will be held at the Southport Community Building at 223 E. Bay St.

The meeting will be to continue discussion on the proposed UDO Update. The Proposed Draft of the new UDO can be found at  https://cityofsouthport.com/23211-2/.

Meetings of the Board of Aldermen are now open. Facial coverings are required.

“In person” Golf Cart registrations have been suspended due to COVID-19, so we are putting the following process in place to serve you.

If you currently have a registered golf cart and need to renew your sticker, you may now print the online form,  Golf Cart Registration Form, and mail it in, along with your payment of $25.00, to City Hall. Your new sticker will be mailed to you once your payment has been processed.

If you have a NEW golf cart or have never had yours inspected, you’ll need to call our office 910-457-7911 to schedule an appointment.

Southport Water Tower

The public will take notice that the City of Southport Zoning Board of Adjustment will
meet on Tuesday, July 28th at 4:30 at the City of Southport Community Building,
located at 226 E. Bay Street for the purpose of holding an evidentiary quasi-judicial
hearing on:

  • VAR 20-0316-01, 235 Sand Dollar Lane, requested by Jennifer Dunn
    A request asking for a variance from the setback requirements to allow a non-permitted
    deck to encroach into the setback and extend within 8 foot of the property line.
  • VAR 20-0629-01, Parcel ID 238HG00701 at the end of E. West st, requested by
    John Browne

A request asking for a variance from the setback requirements to allow a 16 foot house
to be built on a 27 foot wide lot. The normal setback requirement for this lot would be
6.6′ according to the proportional setback requirements. The applicant is requesting
side yard setbacks of 5.5′.
