FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

CITY OF SOUTHPORT

Traffic Statement

Southport, NC – Due to the torrential rain and devasting road collapses from the September 16, 2024 storms and flooding, Highway 87/River Road is currently the only road into and out of Southport.

Beginning on Tuesday, September 24, 2024, a strike team of officers from the Southport Police Department, Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office, and North Carolina Highway Patrol will be diverting traffic at Highway 87 onto Long Beach Road Extension to create a steadier flow of traffic for both in and outbound drivers, if severe traffic congestion occurs. Southport inbound traffic will utilize the new access road beside Lowe’s Home Improvement to return to Southport. Oak Island and NC 211 traffic will continue as normal. In addition to officers, there will also be message boards and increased signage to alert drivers of the new, temporary traffic pattern.

Please continue to expect heavy traffic and prepare for delays. To help mitigate some of the traffic, please adjust regular travel times where able, limit any unnecessary and miscellaneous travel into and out of Southport, and do not travel at peak times, if possible.
