Forestry Committee assists John N. Smith Cemetery Preservation Committee

In early July 2025 the Judy Gordon of the John N. Smith Cemetery Committee approached the Forestry Committee about doing an assessment of the trees located within the cemetery.  Of immediate concern was a dead laurel oak that was causing a hazard to both persons and property as limbs were falling as the tree deteriorated.

Committee Chairman Scott Len contacted arborist Sean Shaffer of “Never Stumped” Tree Service, who graciously agreed to provide his time and equipment to safely remove the tree at no cost, with members of the Forestry Committee and the John N. Smith Committee providing labor to remove the debris.  The tree was safely removed on 31 July 2025 thus mitigating the hazard.

The Forestry Committee will conduct a full inventory and assessment of the remaining trees on the property and provide a full report to the John N. Smith Committee for future management.
