Join the Southport Historical Society on Tuesday, November 14th at 10:00 am, at the Harper Library in Southport for “The Ships of Southport” – Presented by Thomas Milner.
From the first visit by Spanish explorers In 1526 the Cape Fear River was known as a difficult and dangerous place to navigate, yet its location, weather and natural resources made it an essential port on the East Coast of the North American continent. Looking at the ships that have passed by the current location of Southport provides a fascinating perspective on the history of our country and helps explain why Southport is still a window into the world.
Born in Mississippi, Tom Milner has lived and worked all over the Eastern United States and has never been far from the water. Now retired to Brunswick County, his life-long interest in sailing ships and natural curiosity about local history has led to a study of the ships that have come through Southport. He has a master’s degree from St. Louis University and was a CORO Fellow in Public Affairs.
