Naturefest Lecture Series: The North Carolina Wildlife Federation and The Butterfly Highway

September 26, 2023 @ 7:00 pm - 8:00 pm

Join us to learn about the NC Wildlife Federation and The Butterfly Highway.

Wildlife habitat loss is one of the leading causes of species decline today. The Butterfly Highway is a statewide conservation restoration initiative created by the NC Wildlife Federation to address the problem.  The program aims to restore native pollinator habitats to areas impacted by urbanization, land use change, and agriculture across North Carolina through individual action. Southport NatureFest organizer Lora Sharkey who is also affiliated with the Lower Cape Fear chapter of NCWF, will explain the Butterfly Highway program. Learn how collective small steps by individuals can help provide critical wildlife habitat.  Donated wildflower seed packets will be provided to attendees by the Lower Cape Fear Wildlife Federation chapter.

The NC Wildlife Federation is a 501c3 organization that began in 1945.  It is made up of people who enjoy wildlife and natural places in North Carolina. NCWF Conservation Coordinator, Luke Bennett will provide an overview of the NC Wildlife Federation and its various conservation programs.  Luke is a passionate conservationist.  In 2022 Luke raised over $8,000 for conservation efforts by hiking the 1,175-mile-long Mountains-to-Sea Trail in 52 days.
