January 21, 2021 – The sewer line replacement has been completed between Nash & West St.’s. Currently all excess piles of material are being hauled off site and the road surface is being prepped for asphalt. Paving on this block is scheduled to begin next Tuesday, January 26th.  This block will remain closed to vehicle traffic until paving is complete.

Sewer construction will then move to S. Howe St. A temporary bypass will be set up just south of the Moore St. intersection in lieu of blocking the intersection. Once the bypass is set up, construction will start at the Bay St. intersection and replacement will continue towards Moore St.

South Howe St. will be closed to vehicular traffic during construction. Sidewalks and businesses will remain open.

January 12, 2021- Starting today, there will be a temporary change in the Howe St. detour:

Howe St. will be closed between West St. and Brown St. to allow work to be done in the intersection of West and Howe Streets. Howe St. will continue to be closed between Nash and West Streets.

The anticipated duration of this change is three days

December 30, 2020 – Due to congestion and low lying trees, the E. Moore St. detour has been changed:

– The new detour will route traffic off of E. Moore St. onto N. Rhett St. to the stop sign at E. Brown St.
– Follow the directional arrow one block to N. Atlantic where another directional arrow will take you to E. Leonard St.
– E. Moore St. is closed to thru traffic in this area, however shops and parking remain open.
Thank you for your patience as we improve our community infrastructure!

The first set of manholes are expected to be delivered next week and the pipe should soon follow. I do not have a set date as to when digging will begin, but asphalt cuts are slated to start taking place next week. As are traffic control devices. Construction will begin at the Bay St. & S. Howe St. intersection.

September 9, 2020 – Beginning mid Sept. 2020 thru June 2021 (approx.), the City of Southport will be replacing the outdated 1913 sewer system on Howe St. This project will consist of digging up and replacing all sewer lines and any sewer services from the intersection of S. Howe & Bay St. to N. Howe St. and Stuart Ave.

During this time delays will be expected, and traffic flow will be rerouted around the blocks that the construction will be taking place. Sidewalks and foot traffic will be minimally affected during construction.
