As always, ‘Twas the Night before Christmas” will be read, and the Trinity United Methodist Church children’s choir will serenade us with time-honored Christmas carols.  Delight in a Southport Colonial Christmas at Fort Johnston.

We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused.

November 23, 2020 N. Howe St. will be closed Tuesday (Nov. 24, 2020) between  E. Moore St. & Nash St.  The 274 Construction  Group will be making asphalt cuts in preparation for the upcoming sewer project. Detours will be in place, but sidewalks and businesses will remain open.

November 16, 2020The 274 Construction Group will be working on Howe Street between Moore and Bay Streets.  South Howe Street will be closed to traffic. This is in preparation for the sewer project. They will be cutting the asphalt.

November 12, 2020 –  The 274 Construction Group has been in town taking grade shots for the incoming sewer lines at intersections for manhole manufacturing for the Howe St. sewer project. The first set of manholes are expected to be delivered next week and the pipe should soon follow. I do not have a set date as to when digging will begin, but asphalt cuts are slated to start taking place next week. As are traffic control devices. Construction will begin at the Bay St. & S. Howe St. intersection.

September 9, 2020 – Beginning mid Sept. 2020 thru June 2021 (approx.), the City of Southport will be replacing the outdated 1913 sewer system on Howe St. This project will consist of digging up and replacing all sewer lines and any sewer services from the intersection of S. Howe & Bay St. to N. Howe St. and Stuart Ave.

During this time delays will be expected, and traffic flow will be rerouted around the blocks that the construction will be taking place. Sidewalks and foot traffic will be minimally affected during construction.

We apologize for the inconvenience and possible impact to your property or business. Your patience will be greatly appreciated as we work to improve the city’s infrastructure.

The Southport Police Department is currently accepting applications for the annual “Shop with a Cop” program.  Applications are available on the City of Southport website, www.cityofsouthport.com/shop-with-a-cop/or by calling the Southport Police Department at 910-457-7911.

While the department would love to help every child with a need, available resources require the need to limit the program to families within the Southport 28461 zip code. The age limit for children will remain at 14 unless there are special circumstances, and these circumstances should be indicated on the application.

As with many programs and events this year, precautions must be taken to protect the children, our citizens, our officers and volunteers. We will not be doing the traditional meet and shop with officers at Walmart as in years past. Gifts will be bought, packaged and identified for each individual child. On December 17th – 19th (Thursday, Friday and Saturday), the gifts will be available for curbside pick-up at the Southport Fire Department Substation located at 111 Nash Street from 10am until 4 pm. Photo identification of the registered parent /guardian is required when collecting the gifts.

Applications will be accepted until 5 p.m. on Friday, December 4th and can be dropped off at the Police Department, 1029 N. Howe St. by the registering parent/guardian, or can be submitted from the City website.

Donations are also being accepted and can be dropped off at the Southport Police Department. Please make checks out to Southport Police Department and note “Shop with a Cop” in the memo section.
