Local Veterinarians are warning there has been an uptick in respiratory viruses in dogs, with several suspected cases at the ER in Wilmington.
HOW IS IT SPREAD?
Canine Influenza is an airborne virus, transmitted by dog-to-dog contact through droplets from coughing, barking, and sneezing.
It is commonly spread where dogs are in close contact with infected dogs in places such as:
- Day Care
- Dog Parks
- Groomers
WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS?
The most common symptom is a persistent cough, affected dogs may have a soft, moist cough or a dry cough similar to kennel cough.
WHAT SHOULD DOG OWNERS DO?
- If your dog is experiencing symptoms, isolate them and contact your veterinarian.
- If your dog is vaccinated, it should be protected.
- If your dog is healthy and unvaccinated, contact your Veterinarian to determine if the Canine Influenza vaccine is appropriate for your dog.
