A message from City of Southport Police Chief, Todd Coring
Beginning at 5pm today, March 30, 2020, the “Stay at Home” Executive Order 121 issued by the Governor will go into effect. We have received several calls at our Office today with questions and concerns regarding the Governors Executive Order (EO 121), as well as, the City of Southport State of Emergency. Answers to some frequently asked questions can be found on this link.
The Southport Police Department will not be stopping cars to check your destination or have in place any roadblocks. We trust those traveling, are doing so for the purpose of essential needs, as spelled out in EO 121. Southport Police will continue checking with businesses and establishments that are required to be closed or have restrictions to assure compliance. The Governor’s Executive Order 121 defines essential needs related to the stay-at-home order. Also, important to note is you CAN be outside for a walk or jog or to enjoy the beautiful weather and fresh air.
However, please know that under the City’s State of Emergency, Mayor Hatem has taken additional measures to assure the wellness of our citizens and community. These include the CLOSING of all city office buildings, restrooms, playgrounds, city-maintained structures in our parks such as decks, walkways, stages and our CITY PIER. The Mayor’s message: “Southport Stay Home” is the key to preventing the spread of COVID-19.
The goal of the City’s State of Emergency as well as the Executive Order by our Governor is to limit the amount of contact between people to minimize the risk of exposure while still allowing you access to essential needs.
Things to remember to keep you well:
- Social Distancing (at least 6 ft. apart)
- No gatherings of more than 10 people.
- Washing your hands frequently with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. If no soap or water available use alcohol-based hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol.
- Avoid touching eyes, nose and mouth.
- Avoid close contact with those who are sick.
- If you cough or sneeze, do it in your sleeve, or use tissue. Dispose of tissue and immediately and clean hands.
- Clean surfaces regularly with disinfectant.
